KATHMANDU, Aug 24: The 12-hour curfew imposed in Mahendranagar from Thursday evening has been lifted. The District Security Committee lifted the curfew at 6 AM today. A curfew was clamped from 5 PM yesterday.
The curfew was imposed after the clash between protesters, who have been pressuring the police to nab the real culprit behind the murderer of Nirmala Panta, and police turned violent. Locals have been protesting for a few days claiming the police have framed and arrested mentally-disabled Dilip Singh Bista over the rape and murder of Nirmala Panta.
Police had fired more than 100 teargas canisters and live ammunitions at the protesters who pelted stones. Two police and six protesters were injured during yesterday's clash.
Arjun Bhandari, 17 was hit by a bullet on his leg and is undergoing treatment at Seti Zonal Hospital. The body of 13 year Nirmala Panta was found in a sugarcane field on July 27. She had gone missing a day before.
Private and Boarding Schools Organisation Nepal (PABSON) and National Private and Boarding Schools Association Nepal (N-PABSON) has claimed the police repressed the peaceful protest and decided to close schools for one day in Kanchanpur district.
