Cristiano Ronaldo has been named the most charitable elite sports star by the US website Athletes Gone Good. Neymar came fifth in the ranking.

According to the list put together by DoSomething.org, the Real Madrid forward leads the field in charitable acts, amongst which his donation of $83,000 to a 10-year-old boy in need of brain surgery was particularly noteworthy.

The striker, who had a modest upbringing in Funchal (Madeira), also donated $165,000 to a cancer treatment centre which his mother, Dolores Aveiro, attended for breast cancer treatment in 2008.

Barcelona star Neymar also featured on the list, behind the wrestler John Cena, the tennis player Serena Williams and the South Korean figure skater Yuna Kim.
