MAHENDRANAGAR, Feb 3: With the Sixth National Games just round the corner, cricketers will have to play their matches on mat as the organizers have not been able to prepare turf wicket in time.

National Sports Council (NSC) unveiled the list of games to be played in Mahendranagar and Dhangadhi only a few months ago. According to the list, cricket will be played in Mahendranagar. [break]

NSC had said it would prepare a cricket field of national standard but the NSC initiated the works quite lately.

NSC asked for a curator just four days ago. Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) recently sent curator Narayan Karki to Mahendranagar after NSC sought for a curator.

“It takes at least three months to prepare a turf wicker but I have been called just four days ago,” said Karki.

NSC had promised to provide Rs 6 million to prepare the ground but the local organizing committee has only received Rs 0.5 million so far. Construction works have been hit as NSC didn´t provide budget on time.

“We are preparing the field by taking a loan of Rs 1 million,” says Kailash Dev Sunar, president of Kanchanpur District Sports Development Committee.

The National Games will be held from February 26 to March 4.

Deuba inspects Games sites

DHANGADHI: Senior Nepali Congress leader Sher Bahadur Deuba on Friday inspected the infrastructure under construction for the upcoming Sixth National Games to be held in Mahendranagar and Dhangadhi from February 26 to March 4.

Deuba inspected two parapets, athletics tracks and the field in Dhangadhi and lauded all those are involved in making the stadium ready through their relentless efforts.

Deepak Saud, coordinator of the Sixth National Games preparation secretariat, briefed Deuba on the progress of the construction works. Saud informed the Games could be held even if the parapets are not ready in time because what matters more is the completion of the track.

Meanwhile, chief of National Sports Council´s maintenance department Arun Upadhyaya said it would take around three years and Rs 30 crore to construct the full stadium, which is not possible before the National Games.
