KATHMANDU, May 18: Chief Justice Min Bahadur Rayamajhee, who has been taking one after another measures for judicial reform after he assumed office last week, has directed chief appellate court judges to clear all cases pending for more than two years in their courts within five months.

In a written direction to the judges, the judicial head has also directed all the judges across the country to strictly abide by the recently-adopted code of conduct for judges.

This is the third measure Rayamajhee has taken to usher reforms in the judiciary. Last week, the Supreme Court announced to set up a directorate to ensure implementation of court judgments and establish a mechanism to hear people´s complaints against judges and court employees. For this, a hotline has already been set up at the apex court.

In his 19-point direction, the chief justice also asked the lower courts to give priority to the cases of old people above the age of 75 so that their cases are settled down within six months.

Supreme Court joint spokesperson Hemanta Rawal said the directions were sent to all 16 appellate courts, which will circulate them to district courts, on Monday.

Article 112 of the Interim Constitution gives power to the Chief Justice to issue necessary directions to lower courts from time to time.
