KATHMANDU, Jan 3: A couple preparing to return to Australia after a short vacation in Nepal has met with a tragic accident involving a scooter in Bhaktapur. While the husband, Nischal Rajbhandari died in the course of treatment on Thursday night, his wife Pooja is currently undergoing treatment in a hospital in the capital.
Nischal, who originally hails from Bhadrapur in Jhapa district, was seriously injured in a scooter accident four days ago in Sano Thimi, Bhaktapur. He died at Norvic Hospital after sustaining critical injuries in the accident. His wife, Pooja Rajbhandari, who was also seriously injured in the same accident, is still undergoing treatment at the same hospital.

The couple, who had been living in Australia for their studies, returned to Nepal for a vacation a few weeks ago. Nischal and Pooja, who were preparing to return to Australia next week, met with the accident while returning to their home in Sano Thimi after shopping for essential goods. According to Bhaktapur police, the scooter lost control while trying to avoid a dog crossing the road.
Nischal was the only son of Chandra Shrestha, a former deputy mayor of Bhadrapur Municipality, and Durga Rajbhandari. Chandra is also a central member of the CPN (Unified Socialist Party), and deputy in-charge of the party's Jhapa district committee.
