Laxmi Pariyar, 22, and Sita Shrestha, 17, both residents of Tankhuwa-3, who have been in love for two years, got married on Saturday. The bride´s parents Birkha Bahadur and Gyanmaya filed a complaint at the DPO claiming that their daughter was underage and forcibly made to elope by Pariyar. The two were arrested based on the complaint. [break]
The two were arrested from Deurali Hotel in Dhankuta bazaar where they were living after marriage.
Police inspector Shiva Sharma of Dhankuta DPO said the girl was handed over to her parents after the latter claimed she was just 15. Sharma also said the girl said she had made a mistake and wished to live with her parents.
However, Pariyar said the two decided to elope owing to social constraints. Sita also conceded that they got married by mutual consent after falling in love.
“I ran away with him as I knew my parents would not allow me to marry a ´Dalit´,” she said, adding that they would eventually end up getting married in the future.
Despite cash incentive announced by the government for those marrying the so-called lower caste, local administration has remained a mute spectator during the incident, said Exploited Nationality Freedom Society´s Chairman for Dhankuta Nain Bishwakarma.
He added that the family members made a mistake by separating the two who married fighting the social ill called untouchability.
