KATHMANDU, July 16: Heavy showers lashing the country since Wednesday will persist till Friday, say weather experts. Although the weather condition will gradually improve, the experts predict moderate to light rainfalls to continue for a few more days.

Besides in the eastern parts of the country, the met office anticipates downpour in the far western region and the mid western region, including in Kathmandu that lies in the central region."The intensity of the rainfall will most likely weaken from tomorrow. However, we cannot promise sunny days. There is strong likelihood of light rainfall continuing till Sunday. The somber weather condition will stay for a while," said Samir Shrestha, meteorologist at MFD.

As per the record of MFD, heavy rainfall has been reported at Kailali, Kanchanpur, Banke and Bardia districts.

The heaviest rainfall of 244 mm was recorded in Nepalgunj followed by Pokhara with 224 mm rainfall. Likewise, Bhairahawa received 133mm of rainfall and Dhangadi 119mm of rainfall. Kathmandu witnessed 35mm of rainfall.

"The monsoon trough that stretches above the Ganga River has entered Nepal's side. A slight movement of the trough has resulted in heavy rainfall in Nepal. We believe, the trough line will retreat to its original position in a few days and the weather condition will eventually improve," said Shrestha.

However, the MFD has warned of potential threat of flooding and landslides, particularly over river basins originating from Siwalik and Mahaabharat range.

"The water level of the Babai River at Banke district rose above the danger mark last night. If the rainfall continues to intensity, it will invite natural disasters," said Shrestha.
