KATHMANDU, May 13: A case on contempt of court on Monday was filed at the Supreme Court (SC) against Kantipur Publications Private Limited.

Advocate Anjani Kumar Pokhrel moved the apex court stating that an article by columnist Bijay Kumar Pandey on Saturday is responsible for holding the court in contempt.[break]

The petitioner has claimed that the article has demeaned the SC and is intended to influence people´s faith in the apex court.

Pokhrel has claimed that the article has not only defamed the justices but has also spread rumor about the court among the public. He has termed the article ´false´ and ´misleading´.

The petitioner has urged the SC to slap one year jail term and a fine of Rs 10,000 on the defendants stating that the article has tarnished the image of the judiciary.

The writ petitioner has maintained that the defendants should be punished in order to stop the trend of interfering with the activities of the judiciary by publishing ´false articles´ in the newspapers.

Chairman of Kantipur Publications Private Limited Kailash Sirohiya, Director Swastika Sirohiya, Editor-in-chief Sudheer Sharma and columnist Pandey are made defendants in the writ petition.
