KATHMANDU, Feb 3: In a bid to diversify the market for domestic products and promote their exports, the government is preparing separate profile of markets in 10 countries with export potential.

Unveiling its 100-day plan on Tuesday, Ministry of Commerce (MoC) said that 'focused profile' of 10 countries with high export potential for Nepali goods will be prepared soon. The ministry will prepare profiles of India, China, Bangladesh, USA, Germany, United Kingdom, France, Japan, Italy and Canada.

Minister for Commerce Deepak Bohara said that the government will study current trade relations, export-import figures and demand for Nepali products in these countries and prepare a separate market profile of these countries. "At present we don't have concrete idea about potential market for our exportable products and status of our products in countries with which we have trade relations," Bohara said. "A separate market profile of these countries will act as a guideline to develop export-friendly policies and also to promote domestic products in the markets where demand is high."

Bohara also said that government will prioritize export of all goods listed in Nepal Trade Integration Strategy (NTIS).

The 100-day work plan also includes the plan to upgrade NTIS and implement it. Similarly, the government also plans to develop product specific export strategy during the period. In the first phase, the ministry will prepare export strategy of coffee, tea, cardamom and ginger.

Likewise, the government also plans to identify and resolve different non-tariff barriers faced by Nepali products in different markets. In the first phase, the government aims to study and resolve non-tariff barriers faced by products like coffee, handicraft and woolen products in Japan, European Union (EU) and USA, cardamom in India and UAE, honey in China and Taiwan, ginger in India and China, and tea in Australia and Russia.

Likewise, the ministry is holding secretary level and joint secretary level inter-governmental meetings between Nepal and India, preparing a framework for building Container Freight Station (CFS) at Chobhar, and beginning construction of dry ports at necessary places.

"We have identified 44 issues that the ministry will work in the next 100 days," Bohara said, adding, "We have designated separate official and department to deal with all these issues separately."

Bohara also said that the ministry will evaluate work progress after the 100-day period is completed. "Officials and departments whose work is found unsatisfactory will be penalized," he added.

On the occasion, Commerce Secretary Naindra Prasad Upadhaya said that the 100-day plan would work as a guideline to ministry officials for next 100 days.
