Collective campaign for women-friendly constitution kicks off

KATHMANDU, July 13: Various organizations have jointly launched a collective campaign for women-friendly constitution from Monday to guarantee women's citizenship and reproductive health rights in the constitution.

Different organizations pitching for women rights including Sancharika Samuha, SAATHI, SANKALPA, Forum for Women, Law and Development (FWLD) and Women Rehabilitation Centre (WOREC) have put in place the collective campaign. They shared their initiative organizing a press conference here on Monday.They have specially raised the issues demanding inclusion of the provision, 'An off-spring, if his/her father or mother is Nepali, shall obtain Nepali citizenship by descent' and 'women shall have the right to reproductive health and allied matters' after the phrase 'safe motherhood to women' in the proposed constitution.

Though assurance of 33 per cent women participation in the House of Representatives and National Assembly is positive, the women rights campaigners have demanded guarantee of 40 per cent representation in local bodies. RSS
