CoAS Trophy kicks off

KATHMANDU, Sept 18: The Chief of Army Staff (CoAS) Trophy kicked off at the Army Headquarters, Bhadrakali on Sunday. The inter-division sports competition of Nepal Army, which spans over three months, includes competitions in six different categories -- athletics, football, basketball, volleyball, taekwondo and boxing. The event also includes swimming, but it is placed under athletics.



Athletics competitions will be held in the first phase for a week.[break]



On the first day, Durga Devkota of Valley Division Headquarters won the women´s 100 m race with a timing of 14.18 seconds. She broke the army´s previous record of 14.34 seconds set by Rupa Khadka of Mid Division Headquarters, who finished third on Sunday clocking 14.44 seconds. Anjali Waiba of Special Force finished second in the event with a timing of 14.31 seconds.



Other events held on Sunday were men´s 100 m, men´s 400 m and men´s 1500 m races.



Min Bahadur Chaudhary of Valley Division Headquarters clocked 11.11 seconds to win the men´s 100 m ahead of Himal KC of Western Division Headquarters. KC clocked 11.20 seconds to take the second place, while Dashi Ram Chaudhary of Eastern Division Headquarters finished third with a timing of 11.33 seconds.



In the men´s 400 m, Padam Karki of Eastern Division Headquarters clocked 51.10 seconds to win the title, while Mukti Khadka of Mid Division Headquarters completed the distance in 52.40 seconds to finish second. Kali Ram Chaudhary of Far Western Division Headquarters finished third clocking 53.38 seconds.



The men´s 1500 m race was a close contest between Hari Kumar Rimal and Kalyan Baniya, both from the Special Force. Rimal outsprinted Baniya in the final lap to win the race in 4:08:70 minutes, 1.3 seconds ahead of Baniya. Moti Lal Rimal of Eastern Division Headquarters finished third with a timing of 4:11:65 minutes.



All the winners received Rs 4,000 each from CoAS General Chhatraman Singh Gurung while the first and second runners-up received Rs 2,000 and Rs 1,000 each, respectively.



Altogether eight teams of Army -- all six division headquarters, the Special Force (No 10 Brigade) and the Supporting Force (engineering and artillery department) -- are vying for the CoAS Trophy that will conclude in mid-December.



The winning team will receive the trophy during Army Day, Mahashivaratri, later this year.
