CoAS Rana off to UK

KATHMANDU, Sept 6: Chief of Army Staff (CoAS) Gaurav Shumsher JB Rana left for an official visit to the UK at the invitation of his British counterpart General Sir Peter Wall GCB CBE ADG Gen, Friday.



CoAS General Rana is acompanied by Director of Directorate General of Military Training (DGMT) Major General Victor Rana and an ADC staff of CoAS Rana.



 "The visit of CoAS Rana is expected to further strengthen and consolidate the friendly relations subsisting between the two countries," said a statement issued by NA Public Relations Directorate.[break]



 Chief of General Staff Lieutenant General Netra Bahadur Thapa will take over the responsibility as Acting Chief of Army Staff during the absence of Rana.



During a week long stay in London, CoAS Rana is also scheduled to hold an informal meeting with NA Colonel Kumar Lama, who is facing human rights violation case in the UK court over his alleged involvement in torturing detainees in Nepal during insurgency period. Booked under Criminal Justice Act, Lama was released in March on condition that he would not leave UK until a final verdict is passed by the court.



Lama was released after depositing a bail amount of 10,000 pound sterling after assurance of Nepal government to UK through diplomatic channels that he would not be provided with travel documents until the court´s final verdict.
