DHARAN, Feb 5: CPN-UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel has accused the coalition government of showing anti-democratic character by moving ahead with a plan to make the local governments without people's representatives.

“We have envisaged a three-tier government with regard to establishing a federal democratic republic. Today, a conspiracy has started to weaken the local level," Pokharel said. “People should understand the fact that to weaken the local level is to weaken the federal democratic republic and the character of the democratic movement in Nepal.”

Secretary General Pokharel also said that the federal democratic republic brought by the people was established as a non-invasive democracy and there was no concept of lack of people's representation in that democracy. He said that despite the Election Commission fixing the date for the local elections on May 18, the government has just remained silent.

Stating that the removal of the UML from the government was aimed at weakening the growing power and popularity of the UML, Pokharel said the country was suffering today as a result of that. “Right now, parliament, government and court do not look like they are fulfilling their duties and responsibility,” he said. “If the people try to govern in a democracy different from what is mandated, the institutions will lose their credibility. Today, the people's trust in all three organs of the government is being eroded.”
