CNI seeks stimulus package for industrial development

KATHMANDU, July 7: Confederation of Nepalese Industries (CNI) has asked the government to float a stimulus package worth Rs 20 billion for industrial development.

Stating that the performance of industrial sector is contracting in recent years, CNI urged Minister for Finance Ram Sharan Mahat to bring necessary policies and programs for giving a boost to the manufacturing sector.

CNI has also urged the government to revisit economic policies for encouraging investment in manufacturing sector. Hari Bhakta Sharma, senior vice president of CNI, said legal reforms, which were announced last year, have not been implemented yet.CNI President Narendra Kumar Basnyat submitted its suggestions for the coming budget to Minister Mahat on Tuesday. The confederation suggested to the government to reduce corporate tax by 5 percent for five years. Likewise, it has proposed to the government to establish a business recovery center in public-private partnership model to address damages incurred by the micro, small and medium enterprises.

It has also called upon the government to make investment in infrastructure projects like the second international airport in Nijgadh and Kathmandu-Tarai Fast Track road.

Members of CNI delegation said the government should facilitate industries producing construction materials to speed up reconstruction works. It has proposed to establish academic centers in each development region to produce skilled workforce for reconstruction works.

Sharma said CNI is ready to open such academies in coordination with the government.
