NEPALGUNJ, Feb 3: Local Tribhuvan Chowk area in Nepalgunj remained tense almost throughout Tuesday afternoon due to sporadic clashes between agitating locals and police personnel. The clash erupted as police attempted to arrest a local Durgesh Gupta.

Police had reached Tribhuvan Chowk to arrest Gupta, who was accused of beating up local businessman Hirendra Khadka on Monday evening. Gupta is Banke district chapter president of ruling Madhesi People´s Right Forum (MPRF)-affiliated Madhesi Youth Front.

Police had arrested two youths -- Raju Gupta and Dhruva Barma -- in connection with the theft of mobile recharge cards from Khadka-owned Sajha Communication at Dhambojhi area.

Gupta had allegedly beaten up and threatened Khadka to help release the arrested youth.

Constituent Assembly member of the MPRF Sarba Dev Ojha said there will be no political protection in the incident and that police should get chance to conduct independent investigation.
