KATHMANDU, July 7: Seven trade unions representing government employees have expressed their concerns over the removal of the term 'employee' from the clause on labor-related rights in the preliminary draft of the new constitution.

Submitting a memorandum to CA Chairman Subas Nembang at Singha Durbar Tuesday, representatives of the trade unions requested Nembang to work to include the word 'employee' in the clause on labor-related rights in the new constitution just as in the interim constitution.

"In the clause on labor-related rights in the interim constitution, it has been stated that 'Every worker and employee shall have the right.' However, in the draft of the new constitution, the clause on labor-related rights states that 'Every worker shall have the right.' So, we want political parties to include the term employee in the new constitution just like in the interim statue," said Punya Prasad Dhakal, president of the Nepal Civil Servants Association.During the meeting, they even warned that they would be forced to launch protests if their demands was not heeded, according to Dhakal.

They have asked speaker Nembang to ensure that the new constitution ensures the rights labors and employees including right to open trade unions.
