KATHMANDU, June 14: Citizens from different walks of life on Tuesday formed “Citizens´ Group to Support and Monitor Implementation of the Five-Point deal on Peace and Constitution” in a bid to exert pressure on the parties to implement the five-point deal reached before extending the Constituent Assembly deadline.

The group coordinated by former UN Assistant General-Secretary Kul Chandra Gautam comprises comedy artiste duo Madan Krishna Shrestha and Haribansha Acharya, senior journalist Kanak Mani Dixit, Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) President Suraj Baidya, Federation of Nepali Journalists President Shiva Gaunle, Nepal Bar Association President Prem Khadka and human rights activists Sushil Pyakurel and Ambika Shrestha. The newly-formed monitoring group has urged top leaders of various political parties to immediately nominate their representatives for the high-level all-party committee to monitor and expedite the implementation of the five-point deal. It has also asked party leaders to work toward resolving the remaining contentious issues in the new constitution before July 16.

Organizing a press meet, the group´s coordinator Gautam also urged political parties to arrive at consensus on the standard norms, number, modality and rank harmonization of the former Maoist combatants to be integrated in the security agencies by June 21.

He also urged the political leadership to set up a separate high-level all-party mechanism to implement agreements reached earlier between the government and the United Democratic Madhesi Front.

Gautam said that the newly formed group will work independently without any political bias. “As citizens we will exert pressure on political parties to fulfill their commitments on the peace process and constitution writing,” said Gautam.

The group will make public the progress made in the peace process and constitution drafting process every 15 days. Actor Shrestha said the group has no political ambition as it has been formed to speak for the general public.
