Chitwan reports new Covid-19 cases after five months

CHITWAN, April 14: Cases of Covid-19 have been found in Chitwan again. According to the District Health Office, Chitwan, after five months of being a Covid-19 free zone, Chitwan has once again reported the infection.

“The number of Covid-19 cases had come down to zero percent since October,” said Gitanjali Dhakal, information officer and public health officer at the District Health Office, Chitwan. “The number of people infected with Covid -19 has increased from April 3,” she said, “Chitwan was a Covid-19 free zone till November 3.” There are a total of 11 active Covid-19 cases in the district at present. Of them, nine people are from Bharatpur Metropolis.

From Ratnanagar Municipality and Kalika Municipality, one person each has been found to be infected with Covid-19. However, their health is said to be normal and they have isolated themselves at their homes. The district has so far reported 34,050 Covid-19 cases. Of these cases, 33,589 recovered while 450 lost their lives as per the statistics of the District Health Office, Chitwan.

Durga Datta Chapagain, chief of the District Health Office, Chitwan, informed Republica that necessary preparations are being made for treatment after the coronavirus infection started appearing again. "We are coordinating with hospitals and municipalities," he said, "Awareness programs are being held in all municipalities along with vaccination."

He said that booster doses of the vaccines are going to be administered for the fourth time in the district. Health workers, over 55 years old and chronic patients over 12 years old have been vaccinated. The third dose should be administered three months after the second dose. He said that the fourth dose can be administered six months after the third dose. 

He also said that 40,000 doses have been set ready for administration in the district. Vaccination is done every Thursday at the District Health Office, Chitwan. More than the targets have been vaccinated in Chitwan. So far, 653,766 people have taken the first dose in the district. Similarly, 641,305 people have taken the second dose and 246,363 people have taken the third dose (booster dose), according to the data maintained by the Health Office, Chitwan.

Situation of Covid–19 infection in Chitwan

On March 16, 2020, the infection was seen in a mother, 63, and her son, 27, who had returned to Nepal from the UK. Only two people were infected in that month. After the lockdown started on March 24, not a single person was infected in the month of April.

The Covid-19 infection gradually increased and was confirmed in 34 people in the month of May. In the same month, one person died. As many as 74 cases were reported in the month of June. In July, 105 people were infected. The infection increased rapidly and reached 1,146 people in the month of August. In the same month, 16 people died. When the first wave came, the most infected were found in the month of November. In that month, 2,158 people were infected. In the same month, 44 people also lost their lives. After that, the infection gradually decreased to 96 people in the month of February 2021.

The infection rate, which dropped to 96 people, increased sharply after the delta variant of Covid-19 started spreading. In the month of March 2021, only 4,177 people were infected. After two months it gradually decreased. The infection was seen in 3,881 people in May 2022 and 3,042 people in June. Again in June, the delta variant spread to extremes. During the 15-month period, the highest number of infections was seen in June, which was around 5,265 people. In July, it decreased sharply to 2,111 people. After that, it gradually decreased to 284 people in November. As many as 320 people died during the second phase of the spread of the delta variant of Covid-19.
