Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi arriving in Kathmandu on September 8

KATHMANDU, Sept. 4: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will arrive in Kathmandu on September 8 on a two-day visit, sources said.

KATHMANDU, Sept. 4: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will arrive in Kathmandu on September 8 on a two-day visit, sources said. 


Leading a high-powered delegation, Wang will fly to Kathmandu after attending Pakistan-Afghanistan-China trilateral meeting in Islamabad, Pakistan. 


Diplomatic sources told Republica Online that Wang's visit will pave way for the Chinese President Xi's prospective visit to Nepal.


"During the visit, the two sides will discuss the possible bilateral agreements between the two countries under the framework of China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative (BRI)," said a source at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Wang will visit Nepal at the invitation of his Nepali counterpart Pradeep Kumar Gyawali.


During the visit, the Chinese foreign minister will hold meetings with President Bidya Devi Bhandari and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. Similarly, he will hold a bilateral meeting with FM Gyawali. 


This will be the first visit by a senior Chinese official since the formation of Oli-led administration in February 2018.  


Meanwhile, the government has intensified preparations to welcome Chinese President Xi in view of his expected visit to Kathmandu in the course of his five-day state visit to India beginning from October 11. 


President Xi is likely to make a stopover in Kathmandu on October 15 during his return to China after concluding his India visit.
