Chief Justice objects Republic Day awards to judges

KATHMANDU, May 30: Chief Justice Ram Prasad Shrestha has objected the decision to award five judges with Suprabal Janasewashress (Third grade), saying that the awards were coffered to the judges without consulting the judiciary.



The chief justice said that such a decision has affected independence of the judiciary, according to Supreme Court co-spokesperson Hemanta Rawal.[break]



President Dr Ram Baran Yadav, with recommendation from the Council of Ministers, conferred the award to Nawaraj Upadhyay, Nil Kanth Updahayay, Shyam Prasad Lawati, Muhammad Juned Ajad and Ratna Bahadur Bagchand on the occasion of second Republic day on Saturday.
