KATHMANDU, July 2: Chicken prices on Saturday registered a hike in view of dipping production during the monsoon. Earlier also, the price of the chicken was increased by Rs 15 a week ago. A joint meeting of poultry farmers, poultry entrepreneurs and retailers decided to increase the prices of dressed chicken and live chicken by Rs 15 and Rs 10 per kg respectively.

With this hike, the price of dressed chicken has gone up to Rs 225 per kg. Live broiler chicken costs Rs 170 per kg. Farmers will get only Rs 160 per kg for live broiler chicken.[break]

"These days chick-rearing has declined because the price of chicken was continuously dropping. Since we could not fulfil the demand as per the requirement, we decided to increase the pric,” said Junga Bahadur BC, president of National Chicken Sellers´ Association. BC added that with the increase in price, they hope that poultry farmers will start rearing and we will be able to fulfil the daily demand. According to the entrepreneurs, poultry farmers had stopped rearing chicks as the price of chicken was dropping for last two months.

BC said production of chicks has declined 20 to 25 percent in most of the farms in the Tarai region. According to him, this has reduced the production due to which the association is forced to increase the price.

"Though daily consumption of broiler chicken has dropped 10 to 15 percent compared to the demand in the previous month due to increase in temperature, it is difficult to fulfil the demand these days. Daily consumption of broiler chicken in the capital hovers around 200,000 kg.

While the association has increased the price of chicken, feed entrepreneurs have reduced the price of feed by Rs 1.5 per kg effective from Friday. According to Narayan Hari Khatri, feed entrepreneur have fixed the price of grade 1 broiler feed at Rs 31.20, grade 2 and grade 3 at Rs 30.5 per kg respectively. Similarly, feed entrepreneurs have also reduced the price of layers feed by Rs 1 per kg.“

"We have reduced the price of feed as price of maize -- major raw material used in feed -- has gone down," said Khatri.
