Chairman Regmi, Indian PM Singh hold talks in New York

KATHMANDU, Sept 29: Chairman of the Interim Election Government Council of Ministers Khil Raj Regmi held talks with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the sidelines of the 68th UN General Assembly in New York on Saturday.



During the meeting, Indian PM Singh emphasized on conducting the elections of Constitution Assembly (CA) at the stipulated time, according to a press statement issued by Rajendra Prasad Pandy, press coordinator of chairman Regmi after the meeting.[break]



The Indian Prime Minister admired the government and people of Nepal for making important headways in the democratic process and said that India would like to see the emergence of a peaceful, stable and prosperous Nepal after the completion of all important political process currently at stake.



“Indian PM Singh stressed that the scheduled CA elections should be conducted on the stipulated date as it was the only means to institutionalize democracy, stability and prosperity in the country,” reads the statement.



Singh also said that his country was ready to provide all kinds of support to help Nepal make the elections a success.



During the talks, he stressed the need for the two countries to work closely together for development, peace and prosperity, and realization of mutual benefits for the two peoples by, inter alia, controlling the menace of terrorism, reducing poverty and creating more job opportunities.



On the occasion, Chairman Regmi told India PM that his government is committed to hold the elections on free and fair basis on the scheduled date.



He added that the government was doing all its best to persuade the dissenting political parties to come on board for the election



Chairman Regmi also thanked the Indian government for pledging support for Nepal’s election process.



During the meeting, the two leaders also expressed satisfaction over the longstanding close and friendly relations and ever widening areas of cooperation between the two countries and emphasized the need to strengthen them for advancing mutual interests.
