Chadha moves on top

KATHMANDU, May 9: Defending champion Abhijit Chadha carded 10-under 62 on Thursday at par-72 Gokarna Golf Club to jump to the top of the leader-board after the completion of the second round in the Surya Nepal Pvt Ltd (SNPL) Masters 2013.



India pro Chadha, who shot a five-over 67 on Wednesday, maintained a two-stroke lead over overnight leader S Chikkarangappa and Shankar Das, both from India, in the tournament with total prize purse of Rs 4.8 million. Chadha, 21, has overall score of 15-under 129.[break]



Chikkarangappa, who shot 10-under 62 on Wednesday, registered a card of three-under 69 on Thursday. Das, who had signed a card of six-under 66 in the first round, improved his performance in the second round and submitted a card of seven-under 65.



Mohd Dulal Hussain of Bangladesh and Indian professionals Ajeetesh Sandhu and Mohd Sanju were all tied for the fourth place at 11-under 133. Hussain, who shot an albatross on the seventh hole, completed the second round with seven-under 65 on Thursday while Sandhu shot 68 and Sanju carded 67.



Manav Jaini stole a bit of a limelight of the second day as he carded hole-in-one on the 16th hole to win a cash prize of Rs 10,000. Jaini also earned Rs 20,000 instituted by PGTI. He signed in a card of 66 to be tied for the seventh place along with Om Prakash Chouhan whose two-day total stood at 134.



Nepal No 1 Shivaram Shrestha added a three-under 69 to his overnight 66 for a total of 9-under 135 that tied him on the ninth position along with Arshdeep Tiwana and Gaurav Ghei.



Amongst the other Nepali golfers, Toran Bikram Shahi, Umesh Nagarkoti and Yelambar Singh Adhikari made the cut. Shahi, who shot 1-over 73 on Thursday, Nagarkoti, who carded 2-under 70, and Adhikari with a level par 72 were all tied for the 39th place with a total of 141.



Altogether, 55 players made it to the money-making rounds after the cut was applied at a very steep 2-under par 142, probably the lowest cut in the history of golf in India and Nepal. Mithun Perera, Harendra Gupta and C Muniyappa were amongst the notable players who missed the cut.



SNPL Masters is the biggest golf tournament in Nepal in terms of prize money and participation of professional golfers. It is the only co-sanctioned event by Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) and Nepal Professional Golfers Association (NPGA).



Tashi Tsering remained on the top of the amateur section with a total score of two-over 146. Tashi Ghale is on the second position with same total. Michael Rai is third with a total of 149.
