The prisoners spoke with Parliamentary National Crisis Monitoring and Instruction Committee member Girirajmani Pokharel and appealed on humanitarian grounds for safer living conditions citing the inmates were forced to take turns to sleep.
At least 17 prisoners were killed and as many as 80 injured at the Central Jail when the 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck half of the country on April 25. 15 of the inmates suffered serious injuries.
The inmates have called for mobilizing the able manpower among themselves for reconstruction work. All the buildings at the Central Jail have been rendered inhabitable and are highly risky. The jail houses 2,484 inmates serving their respective sentences. The jail does not have adequate tarps and the onset of monsoon season could further aggravate the living conditions.
Lawmaker Pokharel, who is also the UCPN (Maoist) Chief Whip, said the issue will be raised at the Committee meeting to seek a solution. The lawmaker was apprised of the conditions in the jail during an inspection by the Jail Management Department official. RSS
