Bouddha Police, aided by local entrepreneurs and public, had installed 35 CCTV cameras from Chabahil area to Boudha and in Jorpati area, enabling it to monitor activities from a control room at its office. [break]
Keeping in view the sensitivity of anti-China activities in and around the World Heritage Site of Boudhanath Stupa and the presence of other crime prone zones in the area the police had begun CCTV surveillance since the last July 29. DSP Manoj KC, chief at the circle office, said, “We are happy to be able to combat different security threats in the area through the use of technology.” With the help of CCTV footage, on Thursday we busted a gang of thieves, who were involved in several thefts in the area.
The group surveyed residential areas and barged into homes when people were out, he said.
According to the police, the thieves have been identified as Prajwal Shrestha, 21, of Sindhupalchowk, Amrit Lama, 21, of Sindhupalchowk, Jimi Lama, 17, of Sindhupalchowk, Lakpa Sherpa, 29, of Okhaldhunga, Ale Tamang, 22, of Solukhumbu and Ramit Tamang, 24, of Kathmandu.
The police also seized 14 mobile sets, 3 laptops, iphones and a camera from their possession. Apart from that, use of CCTVs has been helpful in resolving disputes related to threats, road accidents and so on among locals. The CCTVs were installed at the cost of about Rs 2500,000, out of which 19 are installed around Bouddhanath Stupa.
