Shakya: I feel like I got another life

KATHMANDU, Aug 1: Manish Shakya, the pilot and the lone survivor of the ill-fated Saurya Airlines that crashed near the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) on July 24, killing all other 18 people on board, is preparing for discharge from Kathmandu Medical College (KMC) Hospital.

According to the hospital, preparations have begun for his discharge after his health condition improved.

NC Vice President Purna Bahadur Khadka and KMC Hospital proprietor Sunil Sharma arrived at the hospital to speak to him. According to the doctors, the pilot has not spoken much about the accident yet, except that the aircraft went out of control within seconds after takeoff.

The hospital director Dr Meena Thapa requested everyone not to ask a lot of questions to the captain as his health condition is still very weak. Asking questions regarding the unfortunate accident could result in excessive stress and have a bad impact on the pilot’s health, she said.

Thapa further stated that Captain Shakya was not in the position to go to work immediately as he needed further treatment at home. Shakya has sustained severe injuries to his nose and the spinal cord.

NC Vice President Khadka said that once his condition is entirely stable, the pilot will recount the entire incident during the inquiry meeting. According to Khadka, the pilot expressed gratitude for having survived the accident and said, “I feel like I got another life.”
