Campaigners irked over persisting river pollution

KATHMANDU. Oct 6: It was the 209th week of the Bishnumati River cleanup campaign today. Although the cleaning campaign has continued for long, the continuation of major river pollutant- emptying drainpipe with human excreta in the river- has been ignored for long, which has irked the campaigners.

KATHMANDU. Oct 6: It was the 209th week of the Bishnumati River cleanup campaign today. Although the cleaning campaign has continued for long, the continuation of major river pollutant- emptying drainpipe with human excreta in the river- has been ignored for long, which has irked the campaigners. 


To a gross mismanagement of the garbage, some houses were found draining human excreta directly on the origin of the Bishnumati River. Campaigner Ram Kumar Shrestha said it is persisting river pollutant indeed. 


Five houses have not even set up septic tanks, but emptying human excreta to the river through small pipes, he added. The campaigners, therefore, demanded the authority to take action against the households not setting up septic tanks.

However, a people’s representative at ward level of Budhanilakantha municipality, Bijay Lama, said the households were asked not to throw garbage and drain human excreta directly in the river. 


Over 100 people from different walks of life involved in the cleaning campaign today. One metric ton garbage was collected from the Bishnumati ghat. 


The people’s representatives at wards were also invited but they did not turn up, according to cleanup campaigners. 


Meanwhile, the cleanup campaigns occurred at various places including the major rivers and ring road of the Kathmandu Valley collected as much as 37 metric tons of garbage today. 


On the 282nd week continued as part of the Bagmati sanitation mega campaign, the Sankhamul area was made neat and tidy. 


People from Kathmandu Metropolis, Lalitpur Metropolis, security bodies and social workers joined the cleanup drive. 


The cleanup drive at Aloknagar of Kathmandu was also attended by Inspector General of Armed Police Force, Shailendra Khanal and cine artist Hari Bansa Acharya. RSS
