Call for transforming Tourist Police to keep up with federal setup

KATHMANDU, Jan 26: Concerned authorities have urged the transformation of Tourist Police in line with the federal setup. 

At a program organised on Friday to mark the 39th establishment day of tourist police, they also stressed the need for establishing structures of tourist police in all seven provinces. 

On the occasion, the Inspector General of Police Prakash Aryal emphasised amendments to related laws and acts to transform tourist police in line with the federal setup. 

"Tourists may face risk during their travel for want of proper security arrangement. Tourist police must provide security to them," he said. 

He also lauded the role of tourist police in serving and providing security to tourists despite lacking adequate resources and manpower. 

Director General of the Department of Immigration Dipak Kafle recognised the role of tourist police in providing security to tourists. 

Director General of the Department of Tourism Dinesh Bhattarai stressed the need for bringing programmes and policies to expand structure of tourist police to even rural areas. 

Other speakers including member of the Board of Directors of the Nepal Tourism Board Dipak Mahat, President of the Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal Nawaraj Dahal, President of the Nepal Mountaineering Association Santabir Lama and member of the Federation of Nepalese Chamber of Commerce and Industry Ram Sharan Thapaliya emphasised the expansion of the service of tourist police. 

There are a total of 227 tourist police serving from 23 places of Kathmandu, Pokhara, Solukhumbu, Mustang, Rasuwa, Chitwan, Parsa, Myagdi and Rupandehi, informed chief of tourist police unit Rupa Thapa.
