“The issue of CA term extension could be excluded from the package deal,” Khanal said in a press conference organized at the UML central office after the two-day emergency meeting of the standing committee.[break]
Khanal was optimistic that the Maoist would agree for term extension. “There are still 10 whole days and there can be a lot of development in those days,” he said.
He also criticized Maoist’s announcement that they will announce the constitution from the street if there is no consensus by May 28 – the deadline for the CA to promulgate the new constitution. “Revolution can be staged in streets, but for constitution promulgation, there is a proper place,” he said adding that his party and people would not support any such constitution.
Khanal added that Maoist’s condition of amending constitution to put national consensus for power sharing replacing the majority system as irrelevant. “The constitutional provision has not obstructed the path to national consensus,” he said.

On Sunday, the Maoist had put forward two conditions to extend CA terms. The first is the resignation of Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal for the national unity government led by Maoist and second was the constitution amendment.
When asked about the reports that he had been offered to become Prime Minister by the Maoist, he dismissed it saying ‘it is a story woven by nice journalists’.
