BRIEF NEWS: Dahal lambastes govt for not extending UNMIN term

KATHMANDU, Jan 1: Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal has objected to the government decision to not extend UNMIN´s term. He said it was inappropriate to send the UN body while the peace process is still underway.



He accused the government of taking unilateral decision to this effect without the consent of the Maoist party. [break]



While the government has stood against extension of UNMIN´s term that is expiring on January 15, Maoist leaders have been insisting that UNMIN not be sent back until the peace process is taken to a logical conclusion.



"UNMIN has been playing a positive role. But the ruling parties are trying to send it without our consent. It is inappropriate to send UNMIN without finding a proper alternative," Dahal said at a function organized by Muslim Mukti Morcha in Kathmandu on Saturday.



PLA chief seeks players´ role in politics



Chief of the Maoist´s People´s Liberation Army (PLA) Nanda Kishor Pun has requested to volleyball players to give pressure to political parties and the government to be sincere towards taking the peace process and constitution writing to a logical end. "Players can play an important role to resolve problems facing the country," he said while inaugurating the volleyball competition organized by Dhorpatan Youth Club in Kathmandu on Saturday. He demanded that government allocate adequate budget for the welfare of the players and development of sports sector.


Stern action demanded against cops



DANG: Rights activists have demanded that stern action be taken against the cops who allegedly raped a woman at Puskale VDC last week. A group of rights activists on Friday visited the place where a 46-year-old was reportedly raped by two cops. The group in its report made public on Saturday evening claimed that the cops had raped the woman. Senior Constable Dharma Malla and Constable Balaram Chanara posted at a police unit at Hansapur have been sent to custody after the incident.
