Bricks supply resumes

KATHMANDU, Jan 29: Bricks supply, which remained halted for last two weeks, resumed from Saturday after the government agreed to form a committee to address the demand of brick entrepreneurs.



Brick entrepreneurs had stopped supply of bricks from January 15, saying they will not register themselves for VAT. Interruption in bricks supply was affecting construction activities across the country.[break]



"We have resumed the supply after the government assured us to address our demands," said Bishwaram Kawa, vice-president of Federation of Nepal Brick Industries.



Entrepreneurs agreed to resume the supply after the government formed a committee with 5 members from the government including members from Revenue Investigation Department and Internal Revenue Department, 5 from the federation, and 1 from Nepal Chamber of Commerce and Industry.



Brick entrepreneurs said they are ready to pay three times the existing taxes but are not ready to register themselves for VAT. Brick entrepreneurs pay around Rs 150,000 tax annually.
