KATHMANDU, Nov 23: Neither is there any Jatra nor is it a season of festivals, but Bosigaun, a small village in Satungal VDC of Kathmandu, was full of lights and reverberating with the beats of Dhime baja, a traditional Newari musical instrument, on Tuesday evening.

A crowd of around 500 people was busy worshipping and lighting candles at the local Bhairab temple. [break]

The success of boxer Deepak Maharjan in the ongoing 16th Asian Games had given the villagers a reason to celebrate.

"Deepak confirmed at least a bronze for the country in the Asiad. We are here to celebrate his success and to pray to Bhairab for his success in the semifinal clash against Indian boxer," said Nishchit Maharjan, advisor of Bosigaun Sports Club.

Deepak Maharjan had defeated a Thai boxer 4-0 in the men´s 81 kg weight category on Friday to secure a semifinal spot and at least a bronze medal for himself. Maharjan will take on Indian boxer Dinesh Kumar on Wednesday in the semifinal.

"The Bhairab temple is the oldest in our village. We believe we could achieve success if we worship here. Therefore, we are lighting candles here wishing Deepak the best of luck," said Nishchit Maharjan.

"The whole of Nepal is expecting a semifinal victory for Deepak. He is the only Nepali athlete to confirm a medal in the ongoing Asiad. He has made the country proud, and of course, our village too," said Sangha Ratna Maharjan, karate coach and cousin of Deepak Maharjan.

"Everybody is happy in his success. He made our family proud," said Shyam Krishna Maharjan, the elder brother of Deepak.
