They make sure we have a treasury of style inspiration at our fingertips with their blogs. But contrary to popular belief, their fashionable posts take more than just a click of the camera. A lot of hard work and planning goes behind the scenes. Some of our country’s most recognizable style bloggers share their insight and experience on maintaining a blog.

Among the sea of over-the-top fashion statements, Rhea Pradhan is one blogger making a compelling case for minimal style. The 20 year-olds’ blog may have been born out of boredom almost four years back but with time, she has developed a great passion for fashion. Her personal style has not only earned her a fan following but it has also landed her on a list of most stylish people and helped her get jobs as a stylist. Compared to her peers, Rhea’s posts may be less frequent but her knack for effortlessly putting together ensembles is often worth the wait.

Sticking to your guns
I think it’s very tempting to follow trends especially if you are running a style blog. If I featured more clothes that were sold in the market then it would surely help me get more collaborative gigs with stores around town. However, I wouldn’t be being true to myself. That’s not my style.

I have always built my wardrobe around basics like White t-shirts, jeans, blazer and accessories. I have always liked simple tailoring and clean silhouettes so despite the apparent disadvantage in the income department, I have consciously decided not to follow the city’s fashion crowd. At the end of the day, I do think people are following me because they like that I advocate a different style of dressing. Slowly but surely, I know that decision will pay off.

Creating a vibe
I’m very particular about being consistent about my posts. The fonts, the designs, the photos, they all matter. Initially I had no idea how to start a blog so a tech friend of mine helped me set it up. Since then I have been running it on my own but I would be lying if I bragged that it has been a smooth ride.

Secrets of Stylish Woman

My tip for all aspiring bloggers is to keep playing around with WordPress. There certainly are many tools and tricks that can help upgrade the look and feel of your blog. For instance, it really bothered me that the size of my uploaded photos couldn’t be increased. But after spending a lot of time tweaking various options I learnt how to do it and it makes a tremendous difference. I see many Nepali bloggers haven’t figured that bit out yet so indeed it helps to explore the grounds you are working on.

Setting the scene
One of the biggest priorities obviously is the photos. In an ideal world, we’d be able to hire professional photographers but in Nepal, where blogging is yet to become a lucrative business, most bloggers have to make do with a friend who is good at photography.
But even though somebody else is behind the camera, it doesn’t mean you should let your visions die. Personally I really enjoy discussing ideas for the photo shoots. My photographer and I talk about the kind of shots we are aiming for beforehand. This can be the key to getting good pictures.

Fashion was once famously declared ‘not a man’s main domain’ and Gokul Shrestha admits he feels a little lonely on the blogging scene. At the moment, he is the only male Nepali style blogger setting sartorial trends. The 23 year old is not breaking under pressure though. In fact he bravely plays around with prints, colors and new trends (crop pants for men, anybody?). However, despite his slightly adventurous taste, he expertly works the outfits into a clean and classy look every single time.

Communication key
One of the lessons I have learnt from international bloggers is that you must interact with your followers. Not only is it a polite thing to do, small acts like addressing their queries can go a long way in increasing your followers. I often have many questions from people on Facebook. Sometimes there are guys who want to know how to dress according to their body weight, sometimes it’s girlfriends who want to know what might be a good gift for their boyfriends. I try and help them out as much as my 10-5 auditing day job allows me to.

Camera ready
As anyone can see on my blogs, my pictures are captured around our capital itself. The photos have an urban feel to them and may look like they were shot at random places and moments but believe me, it’s exactly the opposite. Whenever I’m around town, I look for places and consider if they would make good settings for the looks I’m planning. Such planning is necessary.

Take the first step
Running a blog naturally takes a lot of effort. A lot of creativity, research, time, and ideas are required to come up with interesting new posts. Further, in case you wish to expand, get ready for some more hard work. Some believe that opportunities to collaborate will come to them but my experience is that we have to take initiative and network to get them.

Perhaps the most bankable name on the Nepali fashion blogging scene, Khusbu Gauchan has come a long way in three short years. Her love for experimenting with fashion has earned her a reputation of being a bit of a style chameleon. From Boho-chic, sporty to preppy, she has been known to pull off all kinds of looks and they have paid off. Big time. Her blog has the highest number of followers among Nepali style bloggers at 1,227 and her collaborations with various international stores actually gets her free clothes and a decent earning.

Leading the way
Many people are curious about the ways I increase my followers. But in all honesty, there are no tricks. I just blog regularly and put up good content, that’s how you get followers. Also I make sure that I’m always up to date on the recent trends. I do this for all those people who trust me to inform them about it. Also another important factor is the regularity of your posts. If you are irregular then you’ll start losing followers.

Aim High
The best thing you get out of local collaborations is content for your blog. Now they are equally important but collaborating with international online stores certainly has more perks. You get lots of free clothes that you can keep along with money for advertising their site on the blog. So if you are serious about your style blog, make sure you expand your horizons far and wide.

Professional all the way
Anybody who wants to make a serious impression on the blogging scene has to be willing to invest a lot before they start earning. That’s been my experience. I’m of course referring to more than just investing your time. Initially it will be challenging but if you want to reap financial benefits, you have to spend some money first as well. A professional team for example is a great investment. You have to have a team if you want to be a serious blogger. For now, my team consists of a photographer, and a make up and hair stylist.
