BIZ BRIEFS: Namaste Air to start scheduled flights by mid-June

KATHMANDU: Namaste Air, a new private airline, said Thursday that it would begin scheduled flights by mid-June.



Issuing a statement, the airline said it signed an agreement with Agni Air to start operations of domestic flights. “Two of Agni Air’s Dornier aircraft will be used for scheduled flights under the management of Namaste Air,” reads the release.



However, Agni Air will reserve the ownership of the two Dornier aircraft that Namaste Air will fly under its flag.



Additionally, Namaste Air will also bring in three Jetstream aircrafts. “The company will also start flights with its ATR 72-500 aircrafts by September,” Namaste Air said. “There will be another ATR aircraft to operate scheduled flights.”



“We are financially, legally and technically capable to go for scheduled flights in the domestic level,” reads the release.



“The company has already started maintenance of the grounded aircrafts,” the release states Raju KC, executive chairman of the company, saying.



According to the release, the airline will operate scheduled flights between Kathmandu and Pokhara, Bhadrapur, Biratnagar, Nepalgunj, Bhairahawa, Jomsom, Lukla, Dhangadi and Bharatpur. “The company will also provide mountain flight service,” states the statement.



Karki seeks speedy revenue investigation


KATHMANDU : Indicating his first target on revenue leakage, newly appointed chief of the Commission of Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) Lok Man Singh Karki has instructed senior revenue officials to strengthen revenue investigation.



Calling Finance Secretary Shanta Raj Subedi and the heads of the different departments responsible for revenue collection and investigations to his office, Karki urged them to speed up pending investigations.



The Inland Revenue Department (IRD) and Department of Revenue Investigations (DRI) have been investigating various cases of revenue evasion including VAT fraud involving some big business houses.



“He (Karki) instructed us to speed up the ongoing revenue investigation process, bring more sectors under the revenue net and minimize the cases of default so as to drive up revenue collection by discouraging revenue leakage,” Tanka Mani Sharma, director general of IRD, told Republica on Thursday.

“He assured us of every kind of cooperation in investigating the revenue cases,” added Sharma.



Two HBL staff arrested for fraud

KATHMANDU : The police have arrested two staff of the Bharatpur branch of Himalayan Bank Ltd (HBL) on charges of embezzling clients’ deposits. Branch Supervisor Sher Bahadur Thapa and junior assistant Prakash Baral were arrested after an internal investigation carried out by the bank found them to have been involved in the embezzlement of depositors’ money. HBL issued a statement on Thursday saying a that a complaint had been filed at the Chitwan District Police Office against the two alleging that they had been found to have misappropriated money deposited in savings accounts and amount collected from evening counters. Police has initiated an investigation into the case. The bank also said it has taken additional internal measures to ensure the safety of deposits.



IMS to support Daily Life photo title

KATHMANDU : International Marketing Services (IMS), the authorized dealer of Samsung mobile phones for Nepal, has joined hands with Photo Journalists Club Nepal to sponsor the title of the Daily Life category of annual photo contest and exhibition to be organized by the club. Deepak Malhotra, executive chairman of IMS, and Prakash Mathema, president of the club, signed an agreement in this regard on Thursday. Under the agreement, IMS will provide Rs 230,000 in cash and goods to the club and tie up the Samsung Galaxy S4 brand with the Daily Life 2069 category titles.



Donor-funded projects defaulting audits, flouting rules


KATHMANDU : Some donor-funded projects have been found to have failed to complete auditing on time and to be flouting the Public Procurement Act of Nepal. Finance Secretary Shanta Raj Subedi voiced the concern at a meeting with representatives of donor agencies held on Thursday at the Ministry of Finance. “We need to discourage the trend of foreign-assisted projects from ignoring timely audits and from following their own directives by ignoring the existing Public Procurement Act in the course of project implementation,” Subedi said while chairing the first meeting of Nepal Portfolio Performance Review -- a dialogue with donor agencies to evaluate performance of foreign-funded projects.
