On Monday, Ashish Kumar Ram, a local of Raxaul, was killed in police firing at Madhesi protestors at Shankaracharya Gate in Nepali territory near the Nepal-India border.
On Tuesday, local protestors clashed with security personnel on the premises of Narayani Sub-Regional Hospital at around 4 pm. As the situation turned tense, the local administration declared the hospital area a restricted zone.
The incident took place after police personnel led by Sub-inspector Hanuman Yadav allegedly pressured Ashok Ram, the father of the deceased, to admit that his son was an agitator and was attacking the police.
"But I refused to sign the statement," said Ram. According to him, Madhesi protestors intervened and protested against the procedure and police then resorted to a baton charge.
Following the incident, Ram signed a revised statement for the local administration. "I signed the paper stating that my son was not a protestor and he had come to Birgunj for shopping," he said.
Later in the day, the Ram family received the body from the hospital and took it to India for cremation, according to DSP Hogindra Bogati of District Police Office (DPO), Parsa.
He informed that police had clashed with Madhesi protestors after the latter started to vandalize the hospital. "There were a few police personnel at the hospital and the protestors beat them up," he said.
Similarly, Constable Harendra Prasad Kushwaha sustained injury in his eyes in an attack by protestors, according to Parsa DPO. Bidyarthi Giri, a local journalist and Bharat Nepal, a government employee, were also injured when protestors hurled petrol bombs at the dry port, police informed.
DSP Bogati told Republica that the injured policemen are receiving treatment at Narayani Sub-Regional Hospital.
Protestors defying curfew orders continued their demonstrations in the Birgunj area.
"We didn't use excessive force so there were no human casualties," Bogati claimed.
Meanwhile, Pradip Yadav, chairman of Federal Socialist Forum, accused police of suppressing peaceful demonstrations in Birgunj.
DAO Parsa has, meanwhile, extended by a week the time for further investigations into two Indian nationals - Mohmad Jamsaddin Ansari and Samad Ansari of Eastern Champaran, Bihar - who were arrested for their alleged involvement in the sit-in protest at the Nepal-India border.
