Binod Das to retire after Hughes tribute match

KATHMANDU, April 7: Former national cricket team skipper Binod Das, who spent 15 years playing cricket for Nepal, announced his retirement from all formats of cricket on Tuesday amid a press conference held in Kathmandu to name the squads for the Phillip Hughes Memorial Tribute Match.

The tribute match will be the last for Das, who was named assistant coach of men's national team during the ICC World Cricket League Division 2 held in Namibia in January this year.

"The tribute match will be my last match as a player," said Das, who will be the skipper of Team Blue.

Born on April 26, 1983 in Kaliaya, Das spent most of his time playing the ´gentlemen´s game´ and won his first international cap during the ACC U-19 Trophy held in Malaysia in 1997 and had played his last match against United States in the ICC World Cricket League Division 4 held in Malaysia in 2012.

Das made his debut for the national team in 2000 against UAE in the ACC Trophy at Sharjha. He played 68 matches of 50-overs and bowled 434 overs conceding 1549 runs at the economy rate of 3.56. He took five wickets against Myanmar giving away only eight runs. Das claimed 76 wickets at the average of 20.38 in the 50-overs match.

He replaced Raju Khadka in 2005 to become the skipper of the national team.

He also travelled with team Nepal to UAE for the ACC Trophy Elite held in 2012 after the Division 4. But he was not listed in the starting line up of the tournament.

Das has completed ACC Level 3 Coaching Course, the highest level of cricketing course accomplished by only other Nepali coach - Jagat Tamata.

Das still has clear memories of playing the 2002 ICC U-19 World Cup in New Zealand when Nepal, under the captaincy of Das, had maintained the most number of wins.

Nepal had defeated Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Canada, Namibia, Scotland and Bangladesh in the world cup and lost only to England and Zimbabwe.

CAN Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Bhawana Ghimire promised that the cricket governing body will not let Das down. "We have been discussing Das's farewell and we will do every thing possible," she said.
