“Whether it´s a party or a jaunt, no one in our group is allowed to consume alcohol. The use of liquors under any pretext is completely prohibited,” says Yogen Rai, Chairperson of the club, which already has some two hundred members, mostly from Dharan.
The club held a function in the town to celebrate its first anniversary on Tuesday, and the members could indeed be found sipping cold drinks.
“To see these youth engaged in social works is so inspiring. Other should learn from them that life can be beautiful without the use of alcohol or drug,” says Central member of the Federation of Hotel Entrepreneurs Nepal, Mahendra Pradhan.
It was not an easy task to woo youths to the club in the initial days, recounts Yogen. “Some of our members used to drink behind my back. But all of them have turned sober now,” he says triumphantly.
Secretary of the club, Subash Ale Magar adds: “We want to reinvent the once-eroded image of Dharan and its youths, and I personally think we are doing pretty good job here.”
The other impressive aspect of the club is its non-political nature.
“Our club doesn´t work for any political organization, and we won´t tolerate if any of our members are found working for any political group,” says Indra Bahadur Limbu, treasurer of the club.
He further informed that the club has been uploading photos and videos of the club´s activities on the social networking sites to inspire more youths to follow them
