KATHMANDU, July 1: UCPN spokesman Agni Sapkota has said that reports about party unification between his party and Baidya-led CPN (Maoist) have no basis.

Speaking at a press meet organized by Reporters´ Club Nepal in the capital Monday, Sapkota said, “UCPN (Maoist) could sacrifice anything for Constituent Assembly (CA) poll.” He also said that Baburam Bhattarai´s resignation from the post of UCPN (Maoist) vice chairman will not affect the elections. “Baburam Bhattarai´s resignation will not make any difference in the party and it will not affect the elections,” said Sapkota, adding, “Bhattarai made the sacrifice to keep the party strung together on one thread.”

Sapkota also claimed that Bhattarai will take back his resignation decision. He further claimed that Bhattarai will neither join any other party nor form a new party.

“The current Regmi-led government should not be dissolved, the term of the High-Level Political Committee (HLPC) should be extended and the polls should be held on the scheduled date of November 19,” he said. He maintained that the main agenda item in the party´s July 19 plenum is to create conducive atmosphere for the elections.

Speaking at the function, central member of CPN-UML Raghubir Mahaseth said that Baidya-led CPN-Maoist´s boycotting the elections would not affect the elections. “The government should ignore the likes of Baidya and continue with election preparations,” he said, adding, “Government must hold the election at any cost.” He also alleged that the UCPN (Maoist) is still not serious about the elections.

Mahaseth also lambasted Madhesi parties at the function. “Madhes-based parties themselves are the enemies of Madhes because they have done nothing for the cause of Madhes and only worked for personal gains,” said Mahaseth, adding, “Many Madhesi leaders have accumulated huge amounts of property overnight. So the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority should investigate their property."
