KATHMANDU, Oct 9: Health Minister Rajendra Mahato on Sunday said that the final chance of concluding the peace process and writing the new constitution drafting rests with the Bhattarai-led government.

“If Baburam Bhattarai-led government fails to conclude the peace process and draft the new constitution, the country will never get a statute and this will invite further conflict,” said Mahato while addressing a function at the Reporters Club. [break]

He claimed that the government would conclude the peace process in the next two months.

“After concluding the peace process, the Constituent Assembly (CA) term would be extended for a few more months as per the necessity,” added Mahato.

However, Mahato stated that the future of the current coalition government depends on the Maoists´ performance. He also urged the Nepali Congress (NC) and the CPN-UML to support the government.

On a separate note, Mahato who is also the chairman of Sadbhawana Party, termed the leaders, who have been opposing the deal between the Maoist and United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) to recruit 10,000 Madhesi youths in the Nepal Army (NA), as “traitors”.

He claimed Madhesis are more patriotic than people from other communities. “If anybody points fingers at Madhesis on the issue of patriotism, we will chop their fingers off,” warned Mahato.

He said Madhesis have always struggled for national unity. “Madhesis never demanded a separate nationality,” Mahato added.
