CHITWAN, May 23: CPN (Maoist Center) mayoral candidate Renu Dahal is close to victory in Chitwan's Bharatpur Metropolitan City.


With 19,494 votes remaining to be counted, Dahal is leading with the difference of 9,903 votes. It is estimated that Nepali Congress, CPN-UML and CPN (Maoist Center) have mixed votes in the remaining wards.

Earlier, the CPN (Maoist Center) had secured victory in Ward Number 26, the Nepali Congress in Ward Number 27 and the UML in wards 28 and 29. In the vote counting so far, the ruling alliance candidate Dahal has received 43,606 votes.


UML mayoral candidate Bijay Subedi is trailing behind Dahal with 33,703 votes. Similarly, NC rebel candidate Jagannath Poudel, who has given independent candidature, has received 13,350 votes.


Similarly, Chitrasen Adhikari of Nepali Congress (NC) is leading his rival candidate for the post of deputy mayor as the vote counting is currently underway. Adhikari has received 44,828 votes so far, while Himala Gurung of RPP got 26,686 votes. 


A total of 127,918 votes were cast in the local election held on May 13. According to the Election Commission (EC), 108,345 votes have been counted so far.


There are 29 wards In Bharatpur metropolis. Vote counting in Wards 23 and 25 is currently underway.
