BARDIYA, Sep 14: Locals in Bardiya district have started defying the banda called by Tharuhat Joint Struggle Committee (TJSC).

Markets and businesses in the district have reopened. Vehicles have been operating smoothly in Gularia, the district headquarters. With the Teej festival falling this midweek, businessmen and traders started reopening their shops. The markets are packed with shoppers. Shopkeepers said villagers in large numbers from far flung areas have been visiting Gulariya to shop for Teej soon after the markets reopened. The TJSC, which launched indefinite strike from 11, August had call off the banda from September 8 to 12, September. However, it again called an indefinite banda from September 11 protesting against the arrest of its leaders. But this banda has been ineffective, according to locals.

A press statement issued by Amar Khadka, president of Gulariya Chamber of Commerce and Industry has said businessmen will have no option but to defy shutdowns imposed by any political parties as the local economy has suffered hugely due to the bandas. The statement said there is a risk of black marketing of essential commodities due to short supply of the goods in the district. "Entrepreneurs will be compelled to retaliate if anyone tries to enforce banda," said President Khadka adding that entrepreneurs are compelled to take tough decision, as they are not in position to incur more losses.

Police have been escorting the big vehicles in the district. Police have been escorting around 200 vehicles every day in the district, according to the District Police Office (DPO), Bardiya.

Govinda Tharu, coordinator of JTSC, said that they have been discussing relaxing the banda in view of the upcoming Teej festival. "We are forced to reconsider the ongoing banda, as the women have been hit hard," he said.

JTSC called an "unlimited" banda after the police arrested Laxman Tharu for his alleged involvement in the Tikapur incident.
