NEPALGUNJ, May 30: Farmers in Banke district are getting good prices for wheat this season. This year they are getting Rs 400 to Rs 600 per quintal more than what they were offered last year.

“Traders are offering us up to Rs 2,600 per quintal,” said Amar Bahadur Shahi, a farmer from Naubasta - 7. Farmers like Shahi were forced to sell wheat for just Rs 2,000 to Rs 2,200 per quintal last year.[break]

Better prices have brought cheers to the farmers, particularly as wheat production in the district has increased by about 3,000 tons this season.

According to District Agricultural Development Office (DADO), wheat output in the district this season stood at 41,378 tons. Total output last year was just 38,678 tons. Wheat cultivation was recorded in a total of 17,913 hectares this season.

Despite rise in productions, farmers said they were not facing difficulty in finding buyers this season. “Farmers’ cooperatives established in the villages collect wheat from farmers and sell it to traders that are approaching the cooperatives in large number,” said Nirmal Dangi, a farmer in Sitapur. “Demand this season has remained pretty good.”

Although production has increased encouragingly this season, agricultural technicians noted that farmers are not being able to cultivate wheat in all available arable land due to the lack of irrigation facility.

Only 13 percent of the total of 36,500 hectares of cultivable land in the district has irrigation facility. Farmers largely rely on deep tube well for irrigation.
