Bangladeshi diplomat Golam Sarwar assumes the office as the new SAARC secretary-general

KATHMANDU, Oct 28: Ambassador Golam Sarwar from the People’s Republic of Bangladesh has taken up his duties as the secretary-general of the South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation (SAARC), following the approval of the SAARC Council of Ministers. Ambassador Golam Sarwar is the fifteenth secretary-general of SAARC and the third secretary-general from Bangladesh.

Addressing the secretariat staff at a welcome reception, Ambassador Sarwar expressed his gratitude to the esteemed member states for the opportunity to serve the regional association. He emphasized the need to enhance the profile of SAARC and underscored the importance of active and effective engagement to fulfill the important mandates entrusted to the secretariat, while seeking continued support from the SAARC member states.

As a career diplomat, Ambassador Sarwar belongs to the 10th batch of the Bangladesh Foreign Service. He joined the Foreign Service in 1991 and has served in various capacities both at home and abroad.

Before this assignment, Sarwar served as Bangladesh’s Ambassador to Malaysia, the Sultanate of Oman, and Sweden, with concurrent accreditation to Norway, Denmark, Finland, and Iceland. He also served as the Consul General of Bangladesh in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, according to a press statement issued by the SAARC Secretariat.

His distinguished diplomatic career also includes several important assignments in Bangladesh missions abroad, such as Yangon, Kuala Lumpur, Kathmandu, and Washington D.C. Ambassador Sarwar represented Bangladesh on numerous occasions in various regional and international forums.

His assignments in Dhaka also include several key appointments at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, such as assistant secretary, director/deputy chief of protocol, and director-general.

Born in July 1966, Ambassador Sarwar holds a Master of Commerce/Business Degree from the University of Dhaka. He received advanced diplomatic training in Germany.
