KHOTANG, Nov 1: Banibelas Dhungana of Dhakalbesi of Diktel Rupakot Majhuwagadhu Municipality-15 has grown over 1000 saplings of various species of banana in his field. Bananas, which grow all year round, are used for multiple purposes including consumption, giving gifts, and for religious purpose. A rising banana market has made banana farming extremely popular.
Jiwarah Pokhrel, a local of Dhakalbesi, added 500 banana trees in his land. Another local Somnath Khanal also grew an additional 200 saplings in his field. Currently, 35 residences are involved in commercial farming of banana in Dhakalbesi.
Farmers have grown increasingly attracted to banana farming after the municipality made available saplings, plastic ponds, and pipes. After the municipality initiated programs to transform Dhakalbesi into a pocket region for banana farming, the business has taken a commercial turn.
Dhungana, chairman of Local Food Crops Farmer's Group (LFCG) said, “Since mid-March, farmers began cultivating bananas professionally.” Fifteen farmers affiliated to LFCG and 15 others involved with Kalika LFCG began commercial farming along with 5 non-affiliated farmers. As of now, banana farming is spread in 210 ropanies of land in Dhakalbesi.
