KATHMANDU, May 25: UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has urged political parties and other actors in Nepal to make urgent efforts to ensure promulgation of the new constitution within the stipulated deadline of May 27.

“The Secretary-General is concerned about the prospect of the term of the Constituent Assembly expiring without the adoption of a constitution that meets the expectations and aspirations of the people of Nepal,” Ban´s spokesperson said in a statement on Friday.[break]

Ban´s concern comes in the wake of major political parties failing to arrive at consensus on various thorny issues in constitution writing, mainly state restructuring even as the CA term is expiring on May 27. On Thursday, the Supreme Court issued an interim order thwarting the government´s plan to extend the CA term by another three months.

“In view of the very short time remaining before the 27 May 2012 CA deadline, the Secretary-General appeals to the Nepali political parties and other actors to make urgent efforts to preserve the constitution-making process and the gains they have made thus far,” said Ban´s spokesperson.

Ban also appealed to all the parties to remain within the framework of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement and the Constituent Assembly and exercise restraint.
