KATHMANDU, Dec 18: Balendra Shah, the mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC), said that the development of the valley should be done with proper coordination among the bodies concerned.

He said this while addressing a program organized in Lalitpur Metropolitan City on the occasion of the 105th Foundation Day of Lalitpur Metropolitan City on Monday.

He said that to enhance the beauty of the valley, the development of all the metropolitan cities of the valley should be done simultaneously. He said that it is uncomfortable because the federal and local laws are conflicting to develop the valley at the same time.

He requested the Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal to remove the obstacle of the law to solve the long-term problem of waste management “as there is a problem in waste management due to the federal government.” He urged the government to take necessary steps to encroach upon rivers in Kathmandu.

He said, “We have been doing waste management in Banchare Danda. There is an obstacle for the local government to do it by itself, I request the Honorable Prime Minister to remove these hurdles. Therefore, it is desired that the waste management of the valley should be long-term for hundreds of years, not 50 years. There is river encroachment in Kathmandu, not in Lalitpur, there is no footpath encroachment in Kathmandu, but it is in Lalitpur, one day every hurdle will be removed. Any encroachment can be stopped by the local level, but river encroachment can be solved in the time it takes the Honorable Prime Minister to address the next program if he wishes to. It can be done in just five minutes to an hour. Mayors can't do that alone. May Kathmandu be equally bright as Lalitpur. What we do is our duty. It should be understood accordingly.”
