KATHMANDU, June 16: A trade union committee formed by those close to Senior Vice-chairman Mohan Baidya in Gorkha district was dissolved within 24 hours of its formation last Monday, after direct intervention from the party establishment.

The disgruntled hard-line faction has launched a nationwide drive to train the cadres loyal to the faction and form parallel committees in various sister committees across the country in an attempt to counter the party establishment which, according to the faction, has deviated from the ideals of revolution. The workers from the Baidya faction formed an 11-member committee of All Nepal Revolutionary Metal Workers Organization (ANRMWO) in the district which was led by worker leader Kamal Sunar.

There was no committee of the metal workers affiliated to the Maoist party, and the newly formed committee was not parallel either, but it was formed by those from the Baidya faction.

“Immediately after we formed the committee, some party workers [close to Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal] met with us and said the move was not authorized,” Sunar told Republica.

Lawmaker Gyanendra Kumal, who was the chief guest in the function held to form the committee, accused Dahal faction of issuing threats to dissolve the committee.

“They issued death threats to the workers in a fashion the army did during the emergency period,” said Kumal.

According to him, the party´s Gorkha district secretary Chuda Mani Khadka, from the party establishment, directed his men to issues the threats.

“They made us sign a paper and read it out later. We could not understand what was written in it,” Sunar said.

The Maoist trade union has been split vertically into three factions led by Dahal, Baidya and Vice-chairman Dr Baburam Bhattarai. The union leaders Saligram Jammakattel, Badri Bajgain and Lal Dhwaj Nembang are close to Dahal, Baidya and Dr Bhattarai respectively.

Few months back, the party had dissolved all the committees and mandated party Secretary Post Bahadur Bogati to run the party´s trade union and hold a national convention to elect a new leadership, but to no avail. Factionalism in the sister wings of the party has become intense with the party divided over its tactical line and tussle for power.

Secretary Khadka refuted the accusation that he issued such threats. He said, “The committee members put in their papers voluntarily.”
