Locals said they had informed the local veterinary centre in Koiladi VDC after they found four dead vultures in the fields of Sakarpura VDC. “But concerned authorities have shown no interest,” said Ugrakanta Jha, a local. The locals said there might soon be a plague outbreak if nothing is done to prevent the death of vultures.[break]
Farmers in the VDC said they are facing difficulty in cultivating their fields. “The dead vultures have started decaying in the fields and emit a foul smell. We don´t know how long we shall have to wait for the authorities to take action,” grieved Mishrilal Mukhiya, a local peasant.
Locals maintain that the endangered vultures might have died by eating rotting carcass of an ox thrown in a field in a nearby village of Koiladi some seven days ago. “The birds might have died after eating the remains of animals that had been fed diclofenac,” assumed local veterinary doctors.
However, Mirgendra Kumar Singh, a veterinary doctor at the veterinary centre in Koiladi VDC, said he had vaccinated other dying vultures. He said he had informed about the incident to the District Veterinary Office.
Vulture is one of the endangered species. According to a report, there were nearly 9.6 million vultures in the country in the year 1990. But there has been 80 percent decline in the number of vultures.
