Assailants admit attack on inmates

CHITWAN, Dec 8: Three inmates of the Bharatpur Jail on Thursday admitted their involvement in the attack on five inmates, including Tarun Dal leader Shiva Poudel, earlier this week.



When members of the government-formed probe body interrogated the accused, including Amit Lama, they admitted of involvement in the attack, sources said.[break]



Members of the probe committee interrogated Sharan Gurung, Phanindra Shrestha, Sunil KC, Suraj Shrestha, Amit Lama and Sunil Gurung.



According to officials, the suspects also disclosed that others were also involved in the attack. "We inspected the prison and interrogated some of the suspects," said Joint Secretary Shankar Koirala, who heads the probe body. "Investigation is still on."



Also, director of National Investigation Department, DIG Navaraj Thapa, SSP Madhu Pudasaini and director of the department of prison management, Deepak Nepal, are also in the probe team.



Altogether, 22 inmates have been kept at a separate block inside the jail for investigation.



The government earlier suspended Chief District Officer (CDO) of Chitwan Nanda Kishor Tripathi, jailer Chudamani Sharma Paudel and district police chief SP Khinu Prasad Acharya, among other officials, for failing to ensure security of the inmates in the prison.
