SURKHET, July 18: Armed groups in Surkhet have intensified their donation drives of late, especially targeting the business community.

The underground groups are seeking huge donations from businessmen and if refused are planting bombs and spreading terror among the locals. [break]

On Sunday, a cooker bomb was found outside the counter of one Bulbul Oil Store. The incident was owned by a group called Himal-Tarai Tigers. This group was not known until now. The store operator Padam Bahadur Khadka said that the group had demanded Rs 1.2 million a few days ago.

Businessmen said that the group has been demanding donations ranging from Rs 500,000 to two million. The letters sent to them are signed by the group´s commander and district in-charge Raman Singh.

A cooker bomb was found in the house of a hotel owner a week ago.

The Surkhet Chamber of Commerce has, however, said that although the business community is terrorized, no formal complaints have been lodged.

“We will request the government to ensure security for business community,” said Chamber´s General Secretary Padam Bahadur Shahi.

DSP Jeevan Kumar Shrestha said that no formal complaint has been filed at the police station about the threats issued by the armed group.
